Police blow up abandoned parcel at Milan Airport

Italian police have blown up a suspect parcel, which was abandoned in a men’s bathroom at Milan’s Malpensa airport.

An interior ministry spokesman has since confirmed that the device, which measured 20 centimetres by 10 centimetres, contained a detonator and radio receiver but no explosives.

Police destroyed the parcel by firing it with a high-pressure water cannon, reducing it to pieces, said Giovanni Pepe of the airport police.

The security scare caused no air traffic disruption at the airport.

The area where the parcel was destroyed (charter flight check-in) was cordoned off and affected passengers were distributed to different check-in areas.

The incident came amid heightened security at airports worldwide after a Nigerian terrorist attempted to blow up a jet over Detroit on Christmas day.
