Banyan Tree Essentials launches first coral reef-safe sunscreen

This summer, Banyan Tree Hotel & Resorts’ award-winning spa treatment-inspired bath and body line, Banyan Tree Essentials, introduces a new coral reef-safe mineral sunscreen.

The perfect accompaniment to any beach holiday, the Banyan Tree Coconut & Seaweed Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA+++ is designed to soothe and protect the skin before and after sun exposure; while minimising impact on the marine environment.

As part of the leading hotel group’s efforts and commitment towards marine conservation, Banyan Tree Essentials’ first reef-safe sunscreen contains 100% non-nano mineral filters Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide, free from chemical UV filters. The mineral filters found in the Banyan Tree Coconut & Seaweed Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA+++ acts as a physical barrier between skin and the sun, blocking out both UVA and UVB rays without being absorbed into skin – ideal for both sensitive skin and the fragile coral reefs.

In recent years, compounds in chemical sunscreens have been found to be among the key contributors to the pollution of the ocean, causing irreparable damage to coral reefs. While intended to absorb UV rays and minimise sun damage, chemical UV blockers Oxybenzone and Octinoxate have an adverse effect on corals. Once in contact with ocean water, the chemicals render coral reefs’ defenses powerless against bleaching, damaging their DNA and development in the long run.

The lightweight formulation is a dream to apply – whether engaging in water sports or just for lounging by clear blue waters – without leaving a white cast or a greasy finish. Not just safe for the earth, the SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen is also rich in skin-friendly organic ingredients, with no additions of harmful synthetics such as parabens, sulphates, phthalates and artificial fragrances. 94.5% of the formulation is naturally derived, with each ingredient chosen for its multitude of benefits.

Naturally an anti-inflammatory, the Organic Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil – sourced ethically from Koh Samui – comprises of nourishing fatty acids to prevent acne, while repairing skin barrier to keep moisture in. Taking elements from the ocean itself where nutrients are aplenty, marine extracts such as Algae Extract tightens skin while leaving it silky smooth;Jania Rubens (red seaweed) and Spirulina Extract (naturally occurring blue-green algae) hydrates, detoxifies and prevents free radical damage while boosting cell regeneration. To soothe skin that has been exposed excessively to the elements, the infused Peppermint Oil has soothing and cooling properties that freshens skin.

Eco-conscious travellers are now able to achieve wellness and stillness, while doing their part in preserving the environment with the latest addition to Banyan Tree Essentials’ Coconut and Seaweed collection.

The Banyan Tree Coconut & Seaweed Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA+++ is available from 5 August 2019 at USD32.90 on https://essentials.banyantree.com/.
