Broadway Collection musicals nominated for top Tony Awards
Broadway Inbound is celebrating the news that multiple shows from the Broadway Collection have been nominated across competitive categories for the 72nd Tony Awards.
Four of the newest shows on Broadway and in the Collection – The Band’s Visit, Frozen, Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical – have received the ‘Best Musical’ nomination. My Fair Lady, Carousel and Once On This Island – have all received the ‘Best Revival of a Musical’ nomination.
Performers and behind the scenes talent across these shows have also been recognised. This includes Taylor Louderman, currently starring as Regina George in Mean Girls, who has received a ‘Best Leading Actress in a Musical’ nomination and David Zinn, costume designer for SpongeBob SquarePants, who has been nominated in the ‘Best Costume Designer of a Musical’ category.
Rebecca George, Broadway Inbound Trade Sales Manager, Australia and New Zealand, says: “We know Broadway is and continues to be a major attraction for Australian and New Zealand visitors to New York City.
“Broadway Inbound prides itself on helping travellers experience the best of Broadway, so we’re pleased to see that four of the shows in our Collection have been recognised by the industry’s top award. Despite being relatively new to Broadway and to our Collection, The Band’s Visit, Frozen, Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants have struck an instant chord with Broadway-goers. They are all shows with a lot of fun, laughter and human emotion, and they appeal to a broad range of travellers. We can guarantee they’ll be some of the hottest shows on Broadway after their nominations. So for any clients heading to New York City, be sure to book tickets well in advance”
Nominations for the 72nd Tony Awards were announced earlier in May at a ceremony at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Tony and Grammy Award-winner, Leslie Odom, Jr. and Katharine McPhee, who is currently starring in the Tony nominated musical Waitress, hosted the proceedings.
The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 43 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. Winners will be announced at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, on Sunday June 10, 2018. Award nominees, Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, will host the ceremony.
