Innovation in transport takes many forms. While new airlines have tweaked the previous standard of high service and high fares to create low-cost carriers, some bus companies have gone the other way in providing a more attractive transport alternative different from the stereotype of years past. And so it is with Estonia’s Lux Express, a passenger transport company that offers a comfortable and stress-free way to travel between cities in the Baltic region and their neighbouring countries. The highway network in this part of Europe has seen a lot of investment in recent years and is now well developed and well maintained, making for a smooth ride between within and between Estonia and onward to Riga, Vilnius, Moscow, and St Petersburg, to name a few of the company’s destinations.

Called Lux Express Lounge and Lux Express Special, special buses provide a travel experience comparable to Business Class flights without the inconveniences of very early check-in, airport security, or weather delays. Departing and arriving in the centres of cities served, Lux Express also allows its passengers to avoid treks to and from airports at either end of the trip. Lux Express deluxe buses has two seats on one side of the aisle and one seat on the other, a configuration that makes the cabin feel spacious, as do the very large windows. The comfortable seats are larger and have more padding than a standard bus seat; they also come with their own individual video screens and an onroad magazine called Direction similar to an airline’s inflight magazine.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will all see major celebrations for their respective 100th anniversaries of independence in 2018, placing the Baltic region more brightly in the spotlight as this up and coming region of Europe increases in popularity among travellers wanting to avoid the crowds, costs, and (sad to say) crime and safety issues of the continent’s more famous destinations. 2018 is also the 25th anniversary of operations for Lux Express, which in addition to superior road travel also offers incredibly low fares on the same routes for its regular class of service. It’s hard to beat a fare of ten euros to go from Tallinn to St Petersburg.
