When and why did you join the industry?

I started in 1998 at the Renaissance in Dusseldorf, eager to become a hotelier with no clue what to expect.

What do you like most about your job?

Versatility and the fact that there is never a dull moment.

What’s one of the biggest achievements of your career so far?

Being part of 3 hotel openings.

What’s the best advice ever given to you and who gave it?

It’s a quote by Roy Disney: When your values are clear your decisions are easy.

Who do you admire and see as a role model in the industry?

Having worked with Marriott International for 15+ years I think Mr Marriott is certainly the man when it comes to growing a business in hospitality.

What can people expect from your company and what sets it apart from the rest?

SALA Hospitality Group has a strong commitment to unique design, excellent food and beverage and inspiring locations either beachfront, riverside or on top of a hill overlooking Khao Yai.

What destinations are on your travel bucket list?

Nepal, New Zealand and Iceland.

What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?

I recently did a helicopter ride over Angkor Wat – it’s incredible to see the complex from a birds-eye perspective.

What are three things you always take with you when travelling?

Camera, laptop, headphones.

Name someone famous you’d like to travel with and a destination you’d like to go with them.

Howard Carter to Egypt’s Valley of the Kings.

What direction do you see the industry heading in over the next five to ten years?

It will be interesting to see how the industry evolves in regards to distribution – online, direct or traditional trade. The mergers of more hotel chains will be inevitable, hence there will be unique opportunities for boutique upper-end hospitality companies to offer a slightly different experience than your usual chain hotel.
