Taiwan Tourism Bureau is hosting the 2014 Sun Moon Lake Swim Carnival on August 31st 2014. Not only is it one of the hottest events from the Taiwan Tourism Event Calendar, but also the key activity of LOHAS, one of the 6 major tourism themes. The annual carnival was created in 1983 and this will be its 32nd event; thousands of swimmers from around Taiwan and overseas will gather at the Zhao Wu Wharf to participate in the 3000 meters (approximately 1.86 miles) challenge. In 2002, the carnival was officially recognized by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and became the most prominent and longest-running event at Sun Moon Lake.
Sun Moon Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Taiwan, earned its beautiful name from the unique terrains that resembles the sun on one side and crescent moon on the other. Crowned as one of the Eight Wonders of Taiwan for hundreds of years, Sun Moon Lake’s unrivalled beauty attracts more than six million local and international tourists annually. The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration combined the region’s superior resources such as “high mountain and lake”, “indigenous culture”, and ”nature and ecology”, successfully created popular events such as: Sun Moon Lake Swim Carnival, Sun Moon Lake International Fireworks and Music Festival, Taiwan Cycling Festival – Sun Moon Lake Come!Bikeday, and Sun Moon Lake Marathon. The launch of these events has continuously sparked great interest among Taiwan locals and the public overseas every year. Sun Moon Lake features the only full-range 3D tours (lake, sky and land) in Taiwan. The lake cycling trail has been dubbed by CNNGO, CNN as one of the most beautiful cycling trails in the world, which undoubtedly makes Sun Moon Lake a LOHAS heaven.
According to Mr. Trust Lin, Director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s office in Los Angeles, “In order to bring American tourists the most unforgettable Sun Moon Lake LOHAS experience, after the Swim Carnival, the Sun Moon Lake International Fireworks-Music and Come!Bikeday Festival kicks off on October 17th and will continue for four weeks until November 9th. A total of six lakeshore concerts include programs like ‘The North Face – Sun Moon Lake Fireworks and Music Festival’, ‘Taiwan Mobile Concert: Dreams Comes True’, ‘The Magical Music of Walt Disney’, ‘Sunshine and Seasons’, ‘Come on! Let’s ROCK!’, ‘Music Around Ming Tan’ and more. The grand finale, ‘Taiwan Cycling Festival – Sun Moon Lake Come! Bikeday’, is themed for antique bicycles and costumed riders this year. The charming antique bike riding event will be accompanied by beautiful fireworks and classical music performance by the lakeshore for tourists to fully experience the unique beauty of Sun Moon Lake.”
