It’s interesting to witness the evolution of a restyled hotel. First a caterpillar inching along as just another property, then immersed in a cocoon of innovation during which the metamorphosis takes place to allow for the emergence of a beautiful butterfly. Venice Beach’s beautiful butterfly, Hotel Erwin has taken flight as one of LA’s hottest hotels.
Very similar to another favourite of mine, Avenue Hotel in Copenhagen, Hotel Erwin is a 3.5-star property that attracts a five-star clientele thanks to its spacious suites and unpretentious style. As the only hotel on the Venice Beach boardwalk, Hotel Erwin’s location doesn’t hurt, either. The boardwalk, officially known as Oceanfront Walk, is the biggest tourist draw in Los Angeles; the parade of characters rivals Orange County’s Disneyland in colourful costumes and certainly surpasses it in originality. Amusing souvenir shops to one side and sand and surf to the other make the whole place into a carnival of fun. The famous Muscle Beach outdoor bodybuilding gym is on the boardwalk just around the corner from the hotel and provides a backdrop of impossibly large megahunks to balance the bikini-wearing rollerbladers who whiz by in a flash of blonde.
A member of the forward-thinking, San Francisco-based Joie de Vivre hotel group, Hotel Erwin is not easily categorised, which may explain why it attracts a vast cross-section of travellers from businessmen looking for home-like comfort and hip style without upsetting the Accounting Department to young Hollywood types who eschew the formality and glamour of the city’s more famous watering holes. Who knows, you may find yourself standing next to the latest TV star vampire in Hotel Erwin’s lobby (yes, I saw him with my own eyes, which aren’t as blue as his). Whatever their reasons, guests seeking spacious, stylish accommodation at a reasonable price on the beach are flocking to Hotel Erwin, which was completely sold out on a Tuesday night in October—not at all the norm for LA, but neither is it a surprise these days at Venice Beach’s best hotel.
For visitors to the US in transit in LA before or after flying with V Australia, whose own lighthearted spirit of imaginative service is so compatible with that of Hotel Erwin, Venice makes a convenient base for a few nights to enjoy the best of LA without the hassle of traffic. Located close to the airport but away from the flightpaths, Hotel Erwin is only a short ride to LAX, making the complimentary limousine transfer offered to V Australia’s Business Class passengers an easy start or finish to a stay in the USA.
