A worldwide warning of “terrorist actions and violence” by al-Qaeda and other militant groups, has been issued by the US Department of State, cautioning American citizens around the world to be on high alert.
The Worldwide Caution has been issued to update information on the continuing threat of terrorism against US citizens and interests around the world, reported BBC news.
Current information suggests that al-Qaeda, its affiliated organisations and other terrorist groups continue to plan attacks against US interests in regions such as Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East and may engage tactics such as assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings at events, on public transport, residential areas, schools, public areas and other tourist destinations frequented by US citizens.
The state department specifically warned that continued civil unrest in countries such as Egypt, Syria and Tunisia and terrorist activity Lebanon, Iraq, Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Yemen pose a greater threat for visitors.
The Department of State urges U.S. citizens living overseas or planning to travel abroad to enrol in and update their details on the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
